Discover Southeast Asia: Thailand & Burma

Discover Southeast Asia is an intensive two-month field program that explores environmental and social justice issues in Northern Thailand and Burma. It will introduce you to Southeast Asia’s incredible diversity of culture and environment; a place of of a saffron clad monks, steamy tropical jungles and ancient civilizations. It is designed to provide both group support and structure, while allowing time for personal exploration, discovery, and research. Along our journey we will be staying with village communities, sharing their experiences and supporting their grassroots community projects.

This year, for the first time, we will be traveling to Burma, previously one of the most secluded countries in the entire globe. Recently opened to the outside world, change is now happening at an incredible pace. This represents an unrivaled opportunity to experience first hand a transition that will have enormous impacts on its people, the region and the world.

The program is run in association with Western Washington UniversityIMG_0735, but open to students from all universities. We are looking for students who thrive on a balance of academic field research, volunteer work and personal discovery. If this is you, join us next winter in SE Asia!

Technologies utilized by BGET have included solar electricity, micro-hydro, bio-digesters, solar cooking, water pumping, and water purification methods. These solutions have been provided to beneficiaries in ethnic Karen villages, refugee camps, Burmese migrant schools, children’s homes, medical clinics, and to other emergency relief organizations working along both sides of the Thailand/Burma border.
